22K vs 24K gold: what actually differs
Carat is a purity fraction out of 24, and it maps directly onto price. Everything else you hear about 22K versus 24K follows from that one fact.

The arithmetic
24 carat is treated as pure gold. 22 carat is 22 parts gold to 2 parts other metal, so 22/24 ≈ 91.6% gold. At the same spot price, a gram of 22K is worth about 91.6% of a gram of 24K — and that is exactly how the two figures above are derived from the same international price.
If a shop quotes a 22K rate that is far off 91.6% of the 24K rate, the gap is not purity. It is making charges, margin or a local premium, and it is worth asking about.
Why jewellery is rarely 24K
Pure gold is soft. The alloyed metals in 22K give it the hardness a ring or a chain needs to survive daily wear. That is a manufacturing constraint, not a trick: 24K jewellery exists but dents and scratches easily.
For coins, bars and digital gold the argument reverses — nothing is being worn, so purity is the point.
What this means when you sell
Resale is settled on gold content, so a 22K piece returns roughly 91.6% of the 24K value of its weight, minus whatever the buyer deducts. Making charges are generally not recovered. That difference, not the day’s price move, is usually the largest single cost in a short jewellery holding.
Frequently asked questions
Is 22K gold a worse investment than 24K?
Per gram of actual gold content they track the same international price. The difference that matters is that jewellery carries making charges which are rarely recovered on resale, while coins and bars do not.
What is 18K then?
18 parts gold out of 24, i.e. 75% gold. It is harder still and common in studded and designer pieces.
Does hallmarking change the price?
Hallmarking certifies the purity; it does not change the gold content. It adds a small charge but makes the purity claim verifiable, which matters most at resale.
